Rails around Newry Lecture

21/03/2019

Newry and Mourne Museum will host the talk "Rails around Newry", which will be delivered by Belfast-based railway historian Charles Friel on 28 March at 7.30pm. Cost per person is 3.

The talk will be a recreation in pictures of travelling by train - and usually by steam - from Poyntzpass through Goraghwood to the border, from Goraghwood towards Markethill and Armagh, from Goraghwood to Newry, and from Newry to both Greenore and the famous branch to Warrenpoint. There will also be a few pictures of the horse trams to Rostrevor and the Bessbrook tram.

Most of the pictures will be from the late Des FitzGerald, a dentist from Armagh who spent many hours at the lineside in the 1960s at all times of the day and year. Many of the lines closed before Des began taking railway photographs, so the pictures from earlier times will come form a variety of other photographers.

Charles is a founder member of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland and he has delivered many railway talks across these islands.

This talk complements the current temporary exhibition, 'An Excursion into the History of the Newry and Warrenpoint Railway' which, charts the history of the railway line and memories will be stimulated for many people by the range of objects, documents and photographs on display.

This display will be open until 31 August 2019.
